Jenna’s Story:
March with Me!
April 6th, 1987…
It was 7:00 a.m. Born two weeks too early at Bethesda hospital in Zanesville, baby Jenna was turning blue from cyanosis and was struggling with her breathing. Reacting to the situation, doctors placed a tube through her nose, into the throat, only for the tube to stop about half-way down her esophagus and curl back around, indicating a blockage – in this case, an indicator of a condition known as Esophageal Atresia*. An X-ray revealed a layer of muscle blocking her esophagus. In order for nutrition to reach her stomach, the muscle would have to be removed. In a race against time, baby Jenna was immediately transported to Children’s Hospital in Columbus via a surgical ambulance. The disturbing news was delivered to her parents. Baby Jenna could suffer brain damage or other physical or mental disabilities, as well as pneumonia, choking, or possible death from the saliva and other secretions seeping into her lungs.
Hours later…
The surgical team was prepared for Jenna’s arrival, and prepped for a procedure to remove the layer of muscle. During the operation, however, a fistula was discovered. The fistula, which had developed as a defense mechanism from her lower esophagus to her trachea, had connected to her lung. This disorder is known as Tracheoesophageal Fistula*. With the removal of the fistula, baby Jenna’s lung collapsed. Three additional chest tubes were inserted to keep the lung inflated.
